Diversity here includes culture, worldview, identity, oppression, power, privilege, race, gender, sexuality, vulnerability, spirituality, religion, and disability


1. What is social identity and why is it important?

  • Self-Understanding: Social identities help individuals understand themselves and their place in society, providing a sense of belonging.

  • Social Dynamics: Understanding social identities explains power structures and why some groups face privilege or discrimination.

  • Interpersonal Relationships: Recognizing diverse identities improves communication, empathy, and community building.

  • Addressing Inequality: Examining social identities helps address inequalities and create inclusive policies.

  • Personal Growth: Reflecting on social identities fosters personal growth and empathy.


2. What is the Social Identity Wheel for?

  • The Social Identity Wheel worksheet is designed to help individuals identify their social identities and think about how these identities become more noticeable or significant at different times.

  • It also explores how these identities influence how others perceive and treat them. Participants fill in various social identities (such as race, gender, ability/disability, sexual orientation, etc.) and categorize them based on which are most important to their self-view and which are most significant to how others see them.


3. Activity Goals:

  • Encourage individuals to critically reflect on their identities and how these identities are experienced differently in various social contexts. The workplace can be used as an example to discuss inclusion barriers.

  • Show how privilege makes some identities seem more normal than others. For instance, someone who speaks English as a first language might not often consider it a part of their identity, whereas colleagues who speak other languages might feel their language identity more strongly, especially in the workplace.

  • Increase awareness of shared identities among colleagues and the diversity of identities in the workplace, fostering community and empathy.


In summary, social identity is a crucial concept for understanding individual and group behavior, fostering inclusive environments, and addressing social inequalities.
